History As far back as 1680, French trading posts operated in the region that now makes up Toledo and its suburban cities. European settlers first arrived in the area in 1794, following the Battle of Fallen Timbers and the erection of Fort Industry. Many settlers fled the area during the War of 1812, and resettlement of the area did not begin until 1817, with the Port Lawrence settlement at the mouth of Swan Creek, which created the area that is today’s downtown Toledo. The Vistula settlement, which was founded shortly afterwards, is the area that now makes up Toledo’s historic north end. Founded in 1833 on the west banks of the Maumee River, Toledo was originally incorporated under Monroe County in the Michigan Territories. Toledo was later re-founded in 1837, concluding the bloodless “Toledo War” and incorporating under the state of Ohio. Toledo was slow to grow, unlike many early American “boomtowns”, and did not see significant area growth until the completion of the Miami and Erie Canal and the introduction of rail lines into the area. With railroads, Toledo became a hub of industry and commerce, bringing carriage makers, glass manufacturers, breweries and furniture producers, as well as new residents and immigrant populations following the new availability of factory jobs to the area. Sylvania was, like Toledo, settled in 1833 and is named for the dense forests of the region. In 1835, the Ohio Legislatures ordered the establishment of Sylvania Township within the boundaries of what was then Wood County. Its boundaries included all of what has come to be Sylvania Village and the City of Sylvania, Lucas County. The City of Sylvania is still an incorporated entity within the boundaries of Sylvania Township, which was never officially removed. As such, residents of the City of Sylvania and Sylvania Village also vote for the Sylvania Township elected positions. The Sylvania-Toledo area is historically, culturally and architecturally rich, with patriotic ties to the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. The historic districts of Toledo and its suburban cities feature restored and maintained examples of architecture which span all styles and eras: Colonial. Georgian, Italian Renaissance, Queen Ann, Flemish Gothic, Greek Revival, Dutch Colonial, French Second Empire Victorian and International style homes and buildings line the streets, a proud testament to the people who have made Sylvania and Toledo a rich tapestry of Americana.
